A tall lampshade shaped like a seed pod, rising to a crown of three small open spouts. Raised bands of clay ripple around the body like waves on a night sea, and between them the walls are pierced by hand with drifting dots, hearts, triangles and five-pointed stars. Lit from within, the stars and hearts glow gold, and light pours up through the open crown, scattering spots of shadow across the inside.
The kiln fired the clay in deep iron-brown and smoky grey, with flushes of rust red and a soft silvery ash along the waves.
Unglazed Bizen stoneware, wood-fired in one continuous firing near Bizen, Okayama (GPS 34.7456°N, 134.1894°E). Its colour and markings are kiln transformation (yōhen) — the record of earth and flame in a single moment, not a pattern anyone chose. One of a kind, shaped by human hands, and impossible to reproduce. Traceable to the kiln that made it.
