A small bell-shaped lampshade, closed at the top in a tiny rolled lip like the neck of a bottle. Its walls are pierced by hand with hundreds of round holes of every size, gathered in drifting clusters and trails — so that when a light glows inside, the clay scatters warm points of amber across the room, like fireflies in the dark.
The kiln left the surface a deep iron-grey, washed with green-grey ash and touches of rust red, frosted pale toward the base where the ash fell thickest. The maker's mark is inscribed near the foot.
Unglazed Bizen stoneware, wood-fired in one continuous firing near Bizen, Okayama (GPS 34.7456°N, 134.1894°E). Its colour and markings are kiln transformation (yōhen) — the record of earth and flame in a single moment, not a pattern anyone chose. One of a kind, shaped by human hands, and impossible to reproduce. Traceable to the kiln that made it.
