One of a kind · Only one available

A single hollow ring of clay, drawn like an ensō — the circle brushed in one breath in Zen calligraphy. Near the top, a small opening is torn into the ring for a single stem, and beside it a trail of teardrop holes is pierced through the clay, as if the flower had just shaken off the rain. The ring rests on a small, hand-pressed foot, and is made to be shown on a wall.

The pale cream clay is swept with bold bands of persimmon orange — hidasuki, 'fire cords', left where rice straw was wrapped around the piece in the kiln. Around the opening and across the foot, wood ash melted into a clear, glassy sheen.

Unglazed Bizen stoneware, wood-fired in one continuous firing near Bizen, Okayama (GPS 34.7456°N, 134.1894°E). Its colour and markings are kiln transformation (yōhen) — the record of earth and flame in a single moment, not a pattern anyone chose. One of a kind, shaped by human hands, and impossible to reproduce. Traceable to the kiln that made it.
